What is Gua Sha?

The $10 Facial Tool That Changed My Face

Happy Sunday, friends! Today I wanted to share a facial tool that has literally changed the shape of my face. I’ve always had a round face and yes, I loveddd how cheek filler gave me defined cheek bones but it was just soo expensive! It’s been over 2 years since I’ve gotten cheek filler and I can honestly say that the results of using the Gua Sha are so so similar.

I was complaining to my friend, Ashley, about my tech neck lines haha and she told me I had to try the Gua Sha. I had seen it before but had no idea what it was used for. So ofc, I immediately ordered one off of Amazon.

So what is Gua Sha? Gua Sha is a traditional Chinese skincare technique that involves using a tool to scrape the skin in a gentle, upward motion to improve circulation and reduce inflammation. It’s typically used on the face and neck to help with issues like wrinkles, puffiness, and congestion. The tool used in Gua Sha is usually made of materials like jade, rose quartz, or stainless steel. I opted for this stainless steel one because it’s durable, sterile, and easy to clean.

Aside from the enhanced cheekbones and reduced neck lines, the tool also has the following benefits:

Improved Skin Tone and Texture
Gua sha can help improve the overall tone and texture of the skin by reducing puffiness and inflammation, and stimulating blood flow.

Wrinkle and Fine Line Reduction
Regular use of a gua sha can help to reduce the appearance of wrinkles and fine lines, leaving the skin looking smoother and more youthful.

Lymphatic Drainage
Gua sha can help to stimulate the lymphatic system, which can help to reduce puffiness and improve overall skin health.

Relaxation and Stress Relief
Gua sha can be a relaxing and stress-relieving practice, as the gentle scraping motions can help to release tension in the face and promote a sense of calm.

Better Absorption of Skincare Products
Gua sha can help to improve the penetration and absorption of skincare products by breaking down surface tension and facilitating deeper product penetration.

Improved Elasticity and Firmness
Gua sha helps to promote collagen and elastin production, which can lead to improved skin elasticity and firmness over time.

Relieves Tension Headaches and Migraine
Gua sha can be applied to the scalp and temples to help release tension and migraine pain.

Reduces Dark Circles and Puffiness
Gua sha can help to reduce the appearance of dark circles and puffiness around the eyes.

So how exactly do you use a Gua Sha tool?

Start by cleansing your face and apply a moisturizer or facial oil to your skin. This will help the gua sha glide smoothly over your skin. I personally love to use this hyaluronic acid from Amazon paired with my facial steamer. This combination is game changer! It feels sooo good and it doesn’t have that greasy feeling you get with an oil. You can also use this in the shower with your cleanser.

Next, hold the gua sha tool at a 45-degree angle against your skin and use gentle pressure to scrape along your face in upward and outward motions. This video is great and helped me with the motions!

Use the different edges and curves of the tool to reach all areas of your face, including your forehead, cheeks, jawline, and neck.

Repeat the scraping motions several times in each area, (I typically do about 10 passes for each *section*) but avoid using too much pressure or dragging the tool across your skin too quickly.

After using the gua sha, apply a facial serum or moisturizer to hydrate the skin.

Clean the tool after each use with soap and warm water or alcohol and dry with a clean cloth.

Like with anything else, this takes consistency. I use it 4-5 times a week. Trust the process – you will see results!
