Gillywater Gin & Tonic

A Skinny Gin & Tonic Recipe

I’ve been dying to start a Harry Potter-inspired cocktail series on my blog for a while now! Recently, a few friends and I have been hosting HP movie nights, and they are so much fun! We were each tasked to come up with drink recipes. As I was doing my research, trying to find a fun cocktail, I noticed that it was hard to come across a sophisticated cocktail inspired by HP. I decided to make a few drinks I love, and with the help of my friend, Alison, we were able to find clever references that pertained to the movies!

If you are a fan, then you definitely know this gin and tonic recipe is inspired by gillywater. Gillywater is mentioned a few times throughout the books and is believed to be a combination of gillyweed and water. It also happens to be Professor McGonagall’s drink of choice at the Three Broomsticks (me too, girl, me too).

A few weeks ago, we went to get drinks with our friends at a hotel nearby. Our friend ordered a G&T, and it looked stunning! I knew immediately that I wanted to recreate it at home. The garnishes seriously make the drink.

The cucumber ribbons, thyme, juniper berries, and dehydrated oranges give the drink another layer of depth and make it that much more refreshing!

Skinny Gin & Tonic

Indulge in the perfect refreshment with this delightful light gin and tonic recipe, featuring a smooth and crisp gin base, complemented by premium tonic water, garnished with refreshing cucumber ribbons, zesty dehydrated blood orange slices, aromatic juniper berries, and fragrant thyme sprigs - a true sensory delight for sophisticated yet easy-to-make enjoyment during your next gathering!

Prep Time 3 minutes
Servings 1 drink

Ingredients

  • 6.8 fl oz Fever-Tree Naturally Light Tonic Water*
  • 2.5 - 3 fl oz Gin I like Hendricks or Monkey 47
  • 1 Cucumber
  • Dried Juniper Berries*
  • 1 sprig Thyme
  • 1 Orange Slice, Dehydrated*
  • Ice

Instructions

  1. Using a vegetable peeler, create cucumber ribbons by running it along the length of the cucumber and wrap it around the inside of the glass before adding ice

  2. Fill the glass with ice

  3. Pour 2.5 to 3 ounces of your favorite gin over the ice in the glass. Adjust the amount of gin based on your preference for a stronger or milder cocktail

  4. Slowly pour the entire 6.8 ounces of Fever-Tree Tonic Water over the gin

  5. Drop a few juniper berries and a sprig or two of fresh thyme into the glass. Juniper berries are a key botanical in gin, and the thyme will provide herbal notes to enhance the drink's flavor

  6. Use a bar spoon or a long stirring stick to gently mix the ingredients together

  7. Add a dehydrated orange slice and enjoy!

Recipe Notes

*We've also made the cocktail with Fever-Tree's Elderflower Tonic Water and Fever-Tree's Premium Indian Tonic Water. Both are amazing! Note that these tonic waters aren't considered *light*.

*You can find juniper berries at Whole Foods. The brand is Frontier Co-Op Juniper Berries, Whole.

*You can easily dehydrate oranges or blood oranges by placing the slices in an air fryer for 2.5 hours at 195 degrees fahrenheit, flipping them every hour. Alternatively, you can buy pre-made dehydrated orange slices on Amazon!
